An Abbreviated History Of This World:
The history of this Earth is much like the history of many other Earths. For the citizens of Earth, the notable divergence point was in the summer of the year 1993 CE, when the sorceress Rita Repulsa and her band of goons began her invasion of Earth. She focused her attacks on the once-sleepy town of Angel Grove, California, sending her clay foot soldiers and her large monsters (capable of growing to the size of skyscrapers).
Unfortunately for Rita, her former nemesis, the wizard Zordon from Eltar, happened to be based in a hidden desert fortress near Angel Grove. With the assistance of his trusty robot companion Alpha 5, he called forth the modern era's first Power Rangers---a team of teenaged friends from the local high school who had the talent necessary to use the power to save the city. The Rangers received incredible power, a giant mecha called a Zord (Zordon was a bit of a narcissist, you see), and the power to teleport anywhere in the world at will.
Time passed. The Rangers added and lost members in their ranks, faced down the threat of an evil Ranger controlled by Rita (they saved him and he became a central leader, of course), and new powers came along when old ones were destroyed. Zordon mentored his young Rangers for a few years, using his Viewing Globe to monitor the city and direct the Rangers to the monsters they needed to fight. Soon, though...the Rangers didn't need him anymore. He departed to return to his home planet, and all would be well.
...unfortunately, things didn't go smoothly. Zordon was captured and whisked across the universe (not hard to capture a head in a tube, is it?) and his Rangers took a chance on chasing him into the depths of space. With new alliances forged, the Astro Rangers pursued the latest evil threat to the galaxy and eventually found their lost mentor, but all seemed to be lost when they found him. Zordon advised the Rangers of the only path they could take: shatter the tube and kill him. Zordon was destroyed, but the remnants of his energy formed a powerful wave that was meant to expunge all evil from the galaxy. It worked...for a little while. The insurmountable threats were gone. But evil never sleeps for long...
Times changed. Rangers fought the hot clusters of evil all across the galaxy, though the base of operations remained in the United States. Nearly all the towns attacked by monsters are located in California, for some bizarre reason...
Power Rangers were no longer just teenagers plucked from the local schools. A team was recruited from a group of space explorers, there was a team of volunteer emergency responders, a team from law enforcement, a team of young wizards...Rangers came from all walks of life. There was even a team pursuing their enemy a thousand years into the past, the Time Force squadron from the 31st century.
Up until the year 2027, life for Rangers was fairly predictable. A new enemy would awaken and attack a new town, and a new team of Rangers with a new specialty would receive the power to fight them. Some teams were government-sponsored and publicly known, others were independent and kept their identities secret. No matter what, they always found a way to save the day in the end. And though they were loosely connected, they were a family: if ever the currently active team of Rangers needed help, their predecessors were always willing to come out of retirement and take up the morpher once again.
There were remarkably few casualties from year to year as Rangers got better at evacuation procedures, and the worst that usually happened to a town was a few destroyed buildings and drastically reduced property values for a while. There was a mass emigration from California when people noticed the high rate of monster attacks in the state. Housing prices there are now lower than they've ever been! But the California dream, sunny weather, and close ties to family still keep a sizable population in the area.
This relative stability couldn't last long, though. By the year 2027, the bad guys started to wise up to the Rangers' patterns (it only took them about 35 years!). Villains began coordinating their attacks against Earth: they attacked more than one city at a time, rotated their plans, and sent the skyscraper-sized monsters to the battlefield right away instead of starting with the puny ones like before. Every past Ranger who was still physically fit came out of retirement to fight this threat, and for a while they managed to hold it back---but resources grew thin. Casualties skyrocketed. No matter how strong the Rangers were, this time...evil was stronger.
In early 2029, Earth's remaining Power Rangers led one last battle against evil. Rangers from across the galaxy converged on the moon palace, desperate to break the enemy's source of power. Their valiant attack failed, and all the remaining Rangers died, their essences warping back to rejoin the Grid...but in death their legacy lives on. In death they bring hope, for the added power to the Grid has started to tip the balance of power. Earth's last chance is now upon us. But don't worry, there's still some time: our villains are quite exhausted from their recent total defeat of the Power Rangers and are throwing a very pleasant cocktail party in their palace on the moon. Hey, no one ever said they were geniuses all the time.
Before the villains return their attention to the invasion and the last automated defenses fall, the Time Gate will be activated and history will change. From across time and space, a new generation of heroes have been invited to take up the space. That's you: the newest additions to the great legacy of the Power Rangers.
